Is Western Buddhism Actually Buddhism?

How far can you get from the core tenets of a belief system before you rightfully lose the ability to call yourself a follower of that belief system?

This is no simple question. People have perpetrated wars and genocides to answer the question of who is a “true believer” and who deserves to wear the badge of that belief system.
