Life is a journey but doesn’t come with a travel guide to consult. It doesn’t even come with a map. And nothing that happens to you comes with a user manual.

For that reason, I like to read books with wisdom that endures over the years. Their advice allows me to dodge a few bumps.

In particular, I follow four rules to the letter, which I learned from reading Alan Watts.

I think they can help you a lot, too.

Rule #1: No Freedom = No love

“Love is not meant to take orders.”— Alan Watts.

You cannot force love. You cannot force anyone to love you.

Dependency is not love; it is Stockholm syndrome :-)

That’s why you must let go of everyone who wants to leave your life. — If you don’t, your unrequited love will turn into resentment.

As Alan Watts said, “When there is no risk, there is no freedom,” and only in freedom can love exist.

Lesson: you have to be willing to lose love to gain it.
