Why this project?

16th December, 2019

I’m 36 yrs old, husband to a wonderful wife, and father to an adorable 2 yr old daughter. I’ve been in the Software Engineering profession for 14 years now. I have always prided in my abilities to be empathetic to my customers, and my team members by bringing a sense of ownership in getting things done, bringing clarity to the requirements, improving the user experience, streamlining business and software development processes, writing maintainable and clean code, delivering on time, and communicating clearly — all with a sense of service. Recommendations I’ve earned over the years on Linked-in are a testament to this fact. However, in this process I forgot to serve one very important person — myself!

I toiled away at work notwithstanding the hours spent meeting a hard deadline, assisting team members and customers, and compromised on my own professional development. For the longest time I viewed myself as the victim. However, as they say, you can’t improve a problem you don’t acknowledge. Today, I am confronting that long-held belief of being the victim and replacing it with an acknowledgement of being irresponsible.

In 2019 with the world of software engineering now talking AI, Cloud, Big Data, CI/CD, Micro Services, Micro Front-ends, I find myself having missed several waves. I studied to become an engineer so I could solve problems and help people accomplish more, better and with ease. While I did achieve part of that goal with my work ethics, I now realize that in order to truly deliver the best solutions possible I have to play catch up with technical advances my customers can benefit from.

Stories in this publication will chronicle my journey as I reinvent myself. Watch this space!
