Technology doesn’t shut us down, it wakes us up. It breaks down walls to pave a path for stronger connections and strengthens our bonds to hearts and homes. That’s also why we’re so excited to launch an Extended Reality (XR) tour of Greenpeace New Zealand’s Rainbow Warrior III.

Using XR for good, our digital tour gives a world first view into the purpose-built Rainbow Warrior III vessel and the lives of those on-board.

Open up a digital conversation with Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior III.

After nearly 10 years of campaigning, the Rainbow Warrior III will embark on the Making Oil History tour to celebrate a milestone win against Big Oil. In a world first move to ban offshore oil and gas exploration permits, New Zealanders are making history. To honour this, the Rainbow Warrior III will venture on a 6 week tour of our shores, hosting exciting events to engage with communities and unlock conversations about clean energy.

If you can’t join the celebration first-hand, don’t worry — we’ve worked closely with Greenpeace to ensure that no one misses out experiencing life on-board. We’ve compiled 3D scanning, 3D photography, drone footage and 2D video technology into a digital tour, where users can still remotely embark on an intimate journey of the Rainbow Warrior III.

So we welcome you on-board the Rainbow Warrior’s digital twin — an homage to the inspiring work that generations of heroes at Greenpeace continue to conquer day to day.

A modern day Noah’s Arc

Rich in history and intricate engineering expertise, the Rainbow Warrior III is not just any ship. Purpose-built and designed specifically for Greenpeace’s ocean campaigns, the mission of the Rainbow Warrior III can be felt in every inch of the boat.

With a highly energy efficient design built with minimal environmental impact, the vessel houses up to 30 people across 2 floors. It has the capability to support interventions at both land and sea, with a helicopter landing pad and action boats (RIBs) at the ready. Armed with specialist equipment, the Rainbow Warrior III is an important asset in the continued development of Greenpeace’s scientific research. There’s also an advanced satellite communication system, which documents and live broadcasts footage of environmental crimes around the globe.

But we know the soul of a story lies with the people who tell it. That’s why this journey incorporates conversations with campaigners and crew members as you explore their daily life on-board.

XR as a catalyst for change

Fuelled by technology and tied with a pretty XR bow, Greenpeace can now share their story with ease, today and everyday. With the help of our digital artists, the Rainbow Warrior’s positive legacy has been packaged in a vibrant digital experience. Not only can you be part of Greenpeace’s journey to spark change, but we hope you enjoy XR as a powerful tool to educate and inform at a global scale.

We’re always excited to weave extended reality into positive conversations which challenge convention and push boundaries. Please strap in and immerse yourself alongside the front-line fighters, whose dedication form the small steps which ensure a brighter future for all.
