We’re always looking for ways to empower culture and creativity within local communities around Australia, and across the world. It’s our way of staying connected, making sure that we don’t lose touch with our grassroots as we embark on this incredible journey into the XR verse. That’s why we invited Sofar Sounds to host a secret gig at PHORIA Ground Control.

At first glance, you might question why a tech startup would hand over their office for a music event. But for us, it’s about making a positive impact — any positive impact we can, not just within our own industry, but in every industry.

So when it comes to spreading a message of positivity and diversity, we’re always happy to help. And that is exactly what Sofar Sounds does.

Sofar Sounds is an innovative music movement. Like the name, ‘Songs from a Room,’ Sofar gigs are designed to create intimate listening experiences, anywhere from your office to the cupboard under the stairs. Holding these live performances in small venues is about bringing guests closer to the artists, creating a platform for authentic connection and appreciation.

Since launching in 2009, Sofar Sounds has been working to build a global community of artists, from a diverse range of genres and backgrounds. Musicians, comedians, poets, dancers, magicians, jugglers — performers of any kind can join the movement that has touched the hearts of audiences in over 350 cities worldwide.

There were five awesome performers on the night of our gig.

We also heard from the incredible Ryan Downey and Katie Wighton.

Ryan Downey (left) mesmerizes the crowd with his dulcet tones, while the captivating Katie Wighton (right) gets into her alt-indie groove

These talented artists took the crowd on a vivid journey across the musical landscape of our local community. Each told their own story, had their own unique style and way of interacting with the crowd — and it was fantastic to just how powerful this kind of exchange can be.

It was such an honour to have Sofar Sounds come to transform our atrium — where we hold business meetings, tech demos and vicious games of table tennis — into a space for this unique shared experience. If you want to immerse yourself in a Sofar Sounds gig, all you have to do is enter the ticket lottery on their website.

Reach out to us if you know of an event, group or movement in your community that might need support from a very enthusiastic group of techies.
