The Photographic Muslim

A Mission Statement

--

Cropped frontispiece of Johannes Hevelius’ Selenographia, featuring Ibn al-Haytham and Galileo.

Strange, is it not?

That of the myriads who before us passed the door of darkness through,

Not one returns to tell us of the road,

Which to discover we must travel too.

- Omar Khayyam

As mortal human beings, we are confined to that which is temporal. Yet throughout civilizational history, we have always yearned for, and attempted to comprehend and reach, that which is transcendent. Our coping mechanisms for this existential gap manifest in numerous forms, most notably via the instinct to build structures that may reify what is beyond us.

My project as Haytham ad-Din → The Photographic Muslim is to capture the finest images of houses of worship and devotion among a variety of faiths and denominations. The motivation for this work goes beyond just a passion for aesthetics. I do it as a Muslim saddened and shamed by the shuttering and destruction of so many houses of worship, and the congregations tied to them, at the hands of my co-religionists across the globe.

This photographic project is focused on honoring the preservation of devotional structures and the grand histories they embody. As a matter of principle, none of these posts will ever be monetized.

I humbly look forward to having you, dear reader, join me on this journey.

With peace and blessings to you and yours,

Haytham ad-Din → The Photographic Muslim
