Editor’s note: In honor of launching the new The Pilot Light , here’s a story behind the blog’s name.

We named Homemade’s community blog The Pilot Light after weeks upon weeks of cooking up horrible, horrible names. At one point we bounced between being a few parts Martha Stewart, a bit of Food Channel and a dash of Vice. We were pretty confused.

A clear purpose was the key ingredient we needed. Homemade’s mission is simple: to empower cooks to start their own businesses. The slogan is even shorter: Sell your food. Build your brand.

Then, at a lunch-break-brainstorm-headbang-session, we had a revelation — the internet is full of superstars and food bloggers talking about how to cook food but no one is helping people get our dreams off the ground.

That’s where we come in.

The #1 Resource for Starting a Food Business

We’re here to get people started.

By sharing sharp advice and first-hand experiences from underground food heroes and upstarts alike, and weaving in the data points we collect, we aim to spark the potential every cook has to succeed at running their own food business. To quote Nick Devane,

“We want to create a voice, community, and outlet for the underground food crew.”

And so we named it…

The Pilot Light

We chose this for a couple of reasons:

  1. A “pilot light” is defined as “a small gas burner kept continuously burning to light a larger burner when needed.
  2. We want to be the flame that sparks the larger movement of cooks sustainably providing food to their communities.
  3. A pilot light something almost every cook is familiar with.
  4. It’s the spark where cooking really starts.

How poetic.

This idea stuck like spaghetti and we hope it sticks to you too.
Whenever you’re thinking about how to get your business going, we’ll be here. Whenever you want to run a digital bake sale, we’ll be here. When you’ve decided it’s time to lean into your gifts, we‘ll be here.

We’re here to support you. To light the spark. I guess you could say…

This is where cooks get lit.

Enjoy.
