Contrary to the dominating rhetoric of our two wonderful presidential candidates, America is actually great. The biggest example? Donald Glover is officially set to play the character of Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off, which is expected to release in 2018.

It’s hard to put into words how perfect this casting is. Glover, who has his hands in just about every pie possible (he’s a standup comedian, a tv writer, a tv producer, a movie star, and a grammy-nominated recording artist, among other things) fits almost too well into the role. Not only does he resemble the original actor, Billy Dee Williams, but he just feels like Lando. The quirky, loose-cannon characters that Glover has played so brilliantly in the past are exactly how one would imagine a younger Calrissian, racing the Millenium Falcon to and fro across the galaxy, one step ahead of Han Solo.

The reason so many are rejoicing about this casting, is because Donald Glover is on the cusp of becoming the next BIG American star. He’s the kind of generational talent who not only succeeds at seemingly anything he wants to, but also fits seamlessly into most every role he chooses. His show “Atlanta” which he created for FX, has been a huge critical success and his minor roles in movies like The Martian are terrific, but his best character just might be the grammy-nominated Childish Gambino.

Glover has single-handedly redefined the rapper-actor archetype; he’s like a perfect mixture of Jamie Foxx and James Franco. The 33-year-old combines Foxx’s in-studio and on-screen talent with Franco’s charismatic weirdness and distinctive sense of humor. America has never seen anything like Glover, whose versatility makes him the perfect star for a generation whose interests and attention never stay in one place for long. That’s why this role is so big for Glover, who missed out on being cast as Peter Parker in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” despite a vigorous campaign from fans of the character.

If Lando has as big of a role as we hope he will in 2018’s untitled Solo anthology film, then you can be sure that Donald Glover will be on the top of every film studio’s most wanted list for years to come.
