In India, over the past decade, we have seen a huge shift in the digital design industry. We have seen tremendous growth in 2019 and an exponential increase in the adaptation of designs by every industry.

However, even though the trends of design in India are growing significantly, we are required to brace the latest trends that will allow a significant boost in the careers of every designer.

Pineapple is a design studio based in India, and we decided to dedicate this article to all Indian UX-UI designers with an aim to help cope with the gaps we face today in the digital design industry.

The simple comparison is made with the most upcoming design trends in the rest of the world and how 2020 can be our year to nail some really meaningful digital designs out there.

Please note: This article does not aim to give any criticism on the capabilities of any Indian UX-UI designers but rather aims to supplement growth by pointing out trends followed across the world.

Design trend #1 — Spice up your layouts

This year, the trend to follow is mixing art with digital experiences. Designers are moving away from websites, mobile or dashboard layouts that look like squares and rectangles to circles — ovals — triangles and shapes that we can’t even define.

Art, graphic design, or illustrations are a great way to evoke strong emotions, and mixing it up with user interfaces would bring in great results. Combining such layouts with the latest trends of 3-dimensional illustrations will enhance designs even further.

Design trend #2 — Collaborative user experience

The second upcoming trend revolves around user experience. Initially, the insight we received from the user experience researchers would be limited to their understanding of a particular industry or a segment.

The myth of user experience being conducted only by UX designers is gone. Pineapple stresses on the art of allowing the process being conducted by every individual involved within the product. The knowledge received from engineers, sales teams, artists, teachers, etc. should be accounted for while conducting user research and experimentations.

As user experience becomes complex to create, members who deal with any service or a product also come within the purview. How you sell your product or the way you teach or the uniqueness of your service, all of it gets covered under user experience.

Design trend #3 — The era of micro animations

Micro-interactions are a major part of UX. As Indian designers, we need to follow the trend of designing each button or a navigation experience. They show a new way of how humans interact with computers by making it humbler for users.

Micro animations allow a subtler and an easier way of interacting with the users. The experience changes from being “mechanical” to being “emotional” as micro-interactions are created using a focus on human emotions.

Micro animations are on fire in the design industry because of its nature of being so delightful so keep a track of this trend and use it in your designs subtly, yet tremendously improve user experiences.

Design trend #4 — Custom Typography

Custom typography is the highlight of this year’s design trend. Designers are moving on from old google fonts and searching for more custom web-friendly typography. We at Pineapple believe typography is like a design’s right hand, without the right typography, even the most beautiful designs fail.

With the increment in the number of digital mediums in the world, it becomes easier to consistently see fonts that are used at multiple places.

Using custom typography gives uniqueness and the ability for the design to be scalable.

Try adapting more custom type for the industry you are designing for and it will help bring on a whole new identity for your product/service.

Design trend #5 — Continuous design

Clients, as well as designers, have started to cater to continuous design. With the ever-changing technology trends and updates, each design has to adapt to more and more interfaces. The barrier to log in has reduced and seamlessness is what users are looking out for every day. This is the reason why Netflix or Amazon Prime or Hotstar can be easily accessed through any browser, mobile, iPad,

or smart TV. This is because of the ease of accessibility that designs bring. As designers, we need to be aware of the flexibility of our designs and make sure that they are continuous and not interrupted while adapting to various channels.

Design trend #6 — Developers learning to design

Design unicorns are hard to find but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. To cater to trends you also need to update yourself to the technology your designs would be showcased on. A trend we see that would probably happen over the next few years would be designers learning to code and coders learning to design. That would help designers move years ahead compared to any other industry if we can code art the way we draw it.

In conclusion, every year design trends don’t seem very different from the previous year, but they grow, adapt, and alter for two major reasons — technology and human interaction. It’s vital that each designer starts putting their best foot forward to grow the industry without technology or experiences having to force its growth but in fact the other way round.
