Speaking of being 30, I’m pretty sure you planned out your life and your plans towards a brighter future with a clear, young, and optimistic mind. Married at 25, first kid at 26, second at 28, and well here you are, unmarried with no kids? It came as a surprise but at least you have one thing; that’d be your traditional parents who won’t get off your back for being the only black woman to exist without a “purpose” in life.

That’s what they said, the African aunties with the “you’re getting big, when will you marry?”, “you’re aging, don’t you want kids?”

The solo introduction to your mum’s colleague’s son and the random advice mama gives you while you call to say hi or goodnight.

When did all the advice of not having a boyfriend all through your younger days fly out the window in the blink of an eye? It went from “these men just want to get into your pants, you shouldn’t befriend them” to “when will you introduce us to your ‘fiancé’” at 23!

Daddy, don’t you think it’s a bit too sudden? Just a while ago, I wasn’t allowed to talk to boys. It was always “focus on your studies.”
