You probably don’t need another app on your mac. You can certainly make do without any of these, but each one will enhance your mac experience in some unique way. Also check out my 13 Essential Mac Apps.

WALLCAT

Wallcat (Structures) for today.

Wallcat is a very simple Mac App: Every morning, when you turn on your computer you’ll be welcomed with a new, gorgeous desktop image. You have the option to pick from three themed channels: Fresh Air, Structure, and Gradients.

Irvue is also a great alternative, although I prefer the former more.

SPECTACLE

There are lot of window mangers available for the Mac, some free and open source, and some commercial. This one is free and does it job(s) fairly well.

Alternative: Moom (Paid), BetterSnapTool (Paid)

HEMINGBOARD (PAID)

Hemingboard was designed to have you have puns, rhymes or synonyms when you type. Ofcourse, you can use it too increase your vocabulary, spruce up your resumes and cheat at crossword puzzles.

GIFHY CAPTURE

Turn anything on your screen into a GIF, simple as that. The aforementioned gif you see was made from Giphy Capture. It works!

ENDURANCE (PAID)

Endurance is an app that helps your Mac run longer. It runs in the background and when your battery level drops to a certain level, it automatically starts adjusting your settings and turning off features which use a lot of energy.

QUITTER

Quitter automatically hides or quits apps after periods of inactivity. It’s impressive for minimizing distraction from social apps like Twitter and Slack, news readers, etc.

CHEATSHEET

View Mac keyboard shortcuts in the current application.

NOIZIO (PAID)

Noizio is an app that will drown out the noise of the street and allow you to concentrate on the work at hand, increasing your productivity.

QBSERVE (PAID)

Qbserve is an Automatic private time tracking for OSX. It tracks apps, their windows, sites, Youtube videos, subreddits, and chats in Skype, Slack, and Telegram. The chat tracking is especially handy in case you work remotely and use the same chat apps for both your clients and friends.

Also as a standalone app Qbserve doesn’t require subscription and keeps all your tracked data locally on your machine.

AIRMAIL 3.0 (PAID)

Airmail is hands down, the best Mac email client ever. If you aren’t using it, then you need a changeover.

See, I just rhymed ever with changeover, that Hemingboard app I acknowledged, it’s kinda cool.

TOR BROWSER 6.0

If you truly want an anonymous browsing experience, Tor is the best way to *start* that process and you should definitely start the process.

QWIKI (PAID)

Qwiki is a really nice little, time saving menu bar application for mac. It really comes in handy when you’re writing all those lengthy essays.

POPCLIP (FREEMIUM)

PopClip appears when you select text with your mouse on your Mac. Instantly copy & paste, and access actions like search, spelling, dictionary and over 100 more actions which are quite handy.

It’s the swiss army knife of mac apps.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

RECORDIT (FREEMIUM)

Recordit is a great tool to easily make a screencast and/or turn it into an animated GIF. Though, it does auto-upload and doesn’t have the option to let you save the GIF on your mac which kinda sucks.

Pretty much all of these apps I stumbled upon on ProductHunt. So if you haven’t used Product Hunt till now, you should.

I’ll add more as I find. Suggestions/Critiques are always welcome.

Also, shameless self promotion.
