For those that dread the holidays
May your heart find solace today
For those that dread unkind words
Spoken by those meant to nurture
For those that dread for their safety
From those who swear they love

For those that dread the unbearable weight
Of trying to joyfully celebrate
While innocent children are shot in the street
While innocent protestors are maced and weep
While women hold their daughters closer
And while queerfolk reconsider

For those that dread the holidays
May your heart find solace here
For those that dread the holidays
For those enveloped by fear
For those that dread the holidays
I swear you’re not alone

For those that dread the holidays
My love for you runs deep
For every memory that cuts
Like a broken shard of glass
For every subtle cruelty
Whispered the edge of a dish
For every numbing sentiment and
For the days in which you’ll recover

For those of us that dread the holidays
Please know that you are held.
