If you went ummm… or had to think hard about this one or if your brain replied, ‘nothing much’, your work-life balance probably needs some attention.

Brené Brown, Ph.D., writes in her best-selling book The Gifts of Imperfection,

“A critically important component of wholehearted living is play… Play is as essential to our health and functioning as rest (but) spending time doing purposeless activities is rare. In fact for many of us it sounds like an anxiety attack waiting to happen.”

Work — life balance is important because it impacts wellness at all levels. The individual, the family and the community at large. However in today’s fast paced world and its technological marvels, it is even harder to disconnect from work and have a conclusive end point where you are officially done for the day.

In fact there was a time when I used to be a part of the corporate world, and I recall I actually felt guilty if I took time out for fun. I felt I should be doing something more constructive instead. It felt like a waste of time. While my relentless drive should have increased my productivity, to the contrary, in the long run it actually diminished it. I was just not giving myself enough time to rest and refresh.

I ended up feeling burned out. That’s when I made some life style changes and included fun on top of my list.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I loved what I did then too. I truly enjoyed my job, team and the adrenalin buzz. We even had fun at work, team building events, department lunches, ‘Dress Casual Friday’… and so many other initiatives.

Yet, that does not qualify as your own personal fun time.

Sure, we are all here to find meaning and add purpose to our lives. Achieve those goals and realize those dreams. But you know what? None of it matters unless you are enjoying your life.

Having fun is entirely up to you. It’s healthy and important. Fun need not cost a penny. There are loads of things you can do which are fun and are cost free too.

Do something unproductive.

Only thumb rule?

Enjoy every second of it.

So what do you do for fun?
