Through the mythological stories available with us, let’s look back at the tales of gods. Now most of the stories say that the people with good thoughts and deeds who sacrificed everything for people and protected them were called gods and were immortal. At this point, people who have read the “Shiva trilogy” may agree with me about the idea behind the immortal life. Not only this, but many stories of immortality in almost all the religions lead to common source of some sort of magical drink! In John 6:51 Jesus states that: “he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” In the ancient Greek myths, ambrosia, the food or drink of the Greek gods, is often depicted as conferring longevity or immortality upon whoever consumed it. It was brought to the gods in Olympus by doves. And Khiḍr is one of the four prophets whom the Islamic tradition recognizes as being ‘alive’ or ‘immortal’. He is believed to be immortal as he drank the “waters of life”. Similarly in Hindu mythology the drink is referred to as “somra/ soma” or the “amrutha” in case of the daivas when they fought the asuras.

You might wonder why am I stating all these from various religious beliefs around the world. Actually I am trying to connect the different dots that are available in front of us about “immortality”. Now let me explain a scientific term for you: Biological immortality.

BIOLOGICAL IMORTALITY refers to the state where certain living organisms like the bristlecone pine and the jellyfish can live forever. This organisms can be killed by external causes like injuries caused by harmful predators, catastrophic changes in their environment and fatal diseases, but they do not get fatally affected by the ageing process like in the case of other organisms. They are considered to be biologically immortal as they can possibly live forever by replicating their dying cells. Some scientists have argued that such resistance to ageing may decrease over time. Although the premise that biological aging can be halted or reversed by foreseeable technology remains controversial, research into developing possible therapeutic interventions is underway. Among the principal drivers of international collaboration in such research is the SENS Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that advocates a number of what it claims are plausible research pathways that might lead to engineered negligible senescence in humans.

I hope now everyone would have got the connection. Why can’t this biological marvel be the fact behind the mythological drinks of immortality? Interesting! Our ancestors might have found the way to properly extract the so called “magic” from such organisms and using all the medicinal knowledge they had about plants and animals, they would have developed this drink to make people immortal. Because all the evidences we have never reveal the ingredients behind this discovery. So the jellyfish’s property might have been utilized well. But all this remained hidden under a totally different property of jellyfish’s sting which is very poisonous and has the capacity to kill human beings in a jiffy. This is how most of the secrets were hidden using a totally opposite fact. Now a dialogue from the movie “seven pounds” of Will Smith strikes me: “The first time I ever saw a box jellyfish, I was twelve. Our father took us to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I never forgot what he said… That it was the most deadly creature on earth. To me it was just the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.”

There is one more type of immortality: the technological immortality using artificial intelligence. This is where the human brain and the computer machines can work together. This was well portrayed by Johnny Dep in the movie transcendence. At the end the movie shows the devastating results of such process also. For this particular part only technology can answer us! The most important thing to be kept in mind is that anything that goes against the nature’s laws always brings a devastating effect on us, this is why even most of the gods believed this drink to be evil and even ordered to destroy it.

“The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.” — Bruce Lee.
