Book Sips #49 — ‘The Infinite Game’ by Simon Sinek

I learned about this book by two different recommendations of my friends. So I had to give it a go. The power of book recommendations by real people. By the way, the first social library is live now 🚀 Join here.

Sinek makes a clear distinction between a finite and an infinite game, from a more technical viewpoint and then also applies it to today’s organizations. In ’The Infinite Game’ he presents an unheard business approach in which the objective, the ‘Just Cause’ is what defines the decisions you make, not simply making more money or beating the competence. Basically, he argues, because there’s no such a thing in business — you compete with yourself, to get closer and closer to your leitmotiv. As a leader, applying this fresh mental model not only will be more beneficial for your org but for the world itself. A great lesson of how long-term thinking is much more valuable than defaulting to short-term.

A sip:

‘In weak cultures, people find safety in the rules. This is why we get bureaucrats. They believe a strict adherence to the rules provides them with job security. And in the process, they do damage to the trust inside and outside the organization. In strong cultures, people find safety in relationships. Strong relationships are the foundation of high-performing teams. And all high-performing teams start with trust.’

The Infinite Game

by Simon Sinek

Why read?

The New York Times-bestselling author of Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last, and Together Is Better offers a bold new approach to business strategy by asking one question: are you playing the finite game or the infinite game? In The Infinite Game, Sinek applies game theory to explore how great businesses achieve long-lasting success. He finds that building long-term value and healthy, enduring growth — that playing the infinite game — is the only thing that matters to your business.
