E
very day more and more people want and need to run research on their own, and they’re not necessarily researchers themselves or have enough experience to feel confident. If that somehow defines you, don’t panic, it’s more normal than you might think. So far I’ve also struggled in recommending the ‘perfect’ book for this specific case as normally research books are written for researchers. Finally, we’ve found the exception we all needed here!

This book structure is simple but effective: 9 rules you need to follow when doing product research to keep up the good work. Leveraging the best-practices crafted by the authors (Aras Bilgen, C. Todd Lombardo & Michael Connors) in ‘Product Research Rules: Nine Foundational Rules for Product Teams to Run Accurate Research that Delivers Actionable Insight’ one can find learnings ranging from how to adopt the right mindset when doing research to when to involve the key stakeholders and many other common scenarios you face day-to-day. A sip:

“Research planning is like preparing for a multicourse dinner party. You could start cooking when your guests arrive, but if you do, you’ll be too occupied with cooking to entertain your guests and distracted enough that the food might not be your best. It will be a more memorable, enjoyable event for everyone if you prepare ahead of time. That way, you can spend quality time with your guests and enjoy a delicious menu together.”
