Different Realities

Should I judge you because we are not the same?

Realities,
Yours, mine —
Maybe they’re the same,
perhaps, they’re very different.

Your reality and mine,
are they two peas in a pod,
are they different sparks in the dark?
Is being different a bad thing?
Aren’t we uniquely human, you and I?
Should I judge you when I haven’t walked in your shoes?

So many times we judge without understanding others
I can’t feel your pain and reality, because it’s not mine.

Author’s note:

It is so easy for people to judge others. We do so because we are not the same. The differences that make us unique become a weapon for bullies and people to use against us.

As a five year old I laughed at an obese man on a bike cycling past our house. My mom overheard my taunts and had some advice for me. It’s a lesson I will never forget.

You can only criticize other people if you walked in their shoes for a year my boy…
