S01E13Ai — Conversation w/ Matt Scott, CTO & Co-Founder @ Malong Technologies
In this episode David speaks with Matt Scott, CTO & Co-Founder of Malong Technologies where they specialize on product recognition solutions for retail. We discuss what it takes to build out world-class deep-learning teams and products and some of the advances in Ai and how they related to retail.
Matt’s take on why culture matters in building Ai teams:
“The issue is that if it were just about money, banks would be the best at AI — so it’s something more than that. It’s about establishing a culture and collaboration between people to effectively work together on these problems.
Matt’s view on the two roads that get you to Ai:
“So, there’s basically two roads you can go with deep-learning and computer vision. One road is, like you mentioned, take something from kaggle/stakeoverflow/some piece of code or some framework that you can just apply to a problem and that works for some sets of problems. But the very sophisticated problems, the problems that are more likely to be based in real-world applications where there’s a long tail of edge cases and where scale and lots of details are coming into play; often you’ll arrive at problems that can’t be solved off-the-shelf. So, the second road in Ai/computer-vision is core R&D where you actually have to do research to find a new way through a problem.”
