We Need to Bury the Ritual of Human Burials

Lowering coffins into the ground is an outdated way to deal with our dead

Human burials have been a thing since about 130,000 years ago among our Neanderthal ancestors.

It all started out of concern for the afterlife, which probably doesn’t exist (maybe only in digital form.) We have continued to stick people in the ground since — and it’s time to stop.

It’s difficult to say how much of our usable land that cemeteries/graveyards take up, but some estimates peg it at around 1% or lower.

However, as big cities run out of space to build housing, it’s time to shift our priorities to the living and abolish graveyards.

Some cities like Berlin are apparently already doing this, converting them back into green space or residential developments.

Here are a few more reasons to bury cemeteries for good…

We’re coffin up too much money

First off, have you seen the price of coffins lately?

The most expensive ones are around $50,000, which could go towards making living peoples’ lives better. Even the budget caskets aren’t that cheap.
