A federal judge for the Eastern District of New York issued a stay on Trump’s executive immigration ban. Lee Gelernt, ACLU Deputy Director for the Immigrants’ Rights Project, and Anthony D. Romero, ACLU Executive Director, spoke to the press and an exuberant crown outside the courthouse at Cadman Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn.

The video is embedded below. In it, Gelernt explains that the stay does not mean anyone will be released from detention, but the judge has ordered that the government release the names of the detainees, who have been denied access to attorneys. Once that happens, Gelernt noted that the ACLU would petition for the release of everyone on the list. Many of these individuals are visa holders already legally in the country.

The order came just before a detainee was slated to be sent back to Syria at 9.30 p.m. EST

You can read the judge’s order and decision for Darweesh v. Trump on the ACLU’s site.

(Apologies on the poor video quality. Had to link to my Facebook account, as Medium doesn’t allow videos to be directly uploaded.)
