If you haven’t heard, The Heartland’s prayers have been answered and there’s a blizzard due to wipe out the Northeast and its Electoral College votes on Tuesday. But in case you survive and need to ride out the snow day from the comfort of home, here’s a list of essential survival gear from a Mid-Atlantic native, nor’easter veteran, and current New Yorker.

Rye whiskey

Better than bourbon in the cold, rye has the right amount of spiciness to get you warmed up. If you won’t drink American or Canadian whiskey because you’re one of those, I guess Scotch or Japanese or Irish is okay too, but if you’re lucky enough to have company for the blizzard, for the love of God, don’t lecture them on why some Scotch is peatier than other Scotch unless they ask. (They won’t.)

Blanket

Unless you live in one of those fancy new buildings, there’s a good chance you have little control over the heat in your apartment. A spare blanket for supine couch time is probably a good bet.

And that’s it. Brown liquor and a supplemental blanket. Books are good too, but to be honest, if you don’t have some books lying around or on the Kindle, I don’t have much faith that the blizzard is going to be the day you start reading.

What? Food? It’s one day. You’ll be fine with whatever’s in the fridge or cupboard.

But. If you need to go to the store and buy something to feel in control of an uncontrollable situation, the perfect food is always . . .

Gummy bears

For my money, there’s Haribo and then there’s the rest, though there are some good vegan options as well.

See you on Wednesday.
