In 1981, I graduated from Roosevelt University’s “Lawyer’s Assistant (Paralegal) Program” with honors. I was also appointed to the program’s Graduate Advisory Board.

About a month before graduation, I was heavily recruited by several Chicago law firms, including one of the largest and most respected so-called “liberal” firms, Jenner & Block. I labored at Jenner until I moved to Washington, D.C., and was hired there by another large, liberal, and well-respected firm called Wilmer Cutler & Pickering. I worked at Wilmer until I returned to Chicago in 1992, after my mother’s sudden death in a one-car accident in 1991. (By the way, Lloyd Cutler, one of the founders of the firm, was at that time, the late President Jimmy Carter’s personal attorney).

Both of these law firms have made headlines recently for refusing to abide by Trump’s blatant and brazen attempts to dictate what federal cases lawyers and law firms may take.

Other equally large and rich firms have capitulated to Trump’s demands and are, in fact, cowering under his “executive orders” to stop bringing cases against him and/or his regime.

What does a paralegal do?
