Most families have those we don’t brag about. Dig deep enough, and you’ll find all types: criminals, creepy uncles, pathological liars, hoarders, and more. We talk about them at Thanksgiving and funerals but rarely outside the family. Clarence Thomas’s nephew was in the drug business and was sent to prison. That nephew had a 6-year-old son, Mark Martin, who reminded Thomas of himself. Clarence’s father was absent, and his grandparents took him in under similar circumstances. That would be the same home he later sold to mega-donor Harlan Crow.

Clarence had an adult son from his previous marriage, Thomas, and his new wife, Ginni, who’d been married for six years but had no children of their own. They went to Mark Martin’s parents, approaching them about taking Mark in and raising him. According to a biography of Thomas by Kevin Merida and Michael Fletcher:

“Thomas explained that the boy would have the best of everything — his own room, a private school education, lots of extracurricular activities,”

When Martin was six, he left his family home in Georgia and moved in with the Thomases in Virginia. Clarence and Ginni kept their promises. Mark had his own room, an expensive…
