Fulfilling a promise he made a week previously, Donald Trump issued a video clarifying his position on abortion. An earlier statement from a spokesperson outlined Trump’s support for “states’ rights,” in line with the Dobbs decision by the Supreme Court that repealed Roe v. Wade, the 50-year-old precedent case that legalized abortion.

Trump first stated his support for IVF, a procedure used to help couples have children who otherwise struggle. An Alabama State Supreme Court Justice recently banned the procedure in Alabama based on his religious doctrine, with the backlash causing the Alabama State Legislature to offset the ruling, though institutions offering IVF services are still unclear as to their legal liability. The University of Alabama clinic with the greatest number of deliveries is shutting down its IVF program at the end of 2024 due to litigation concerns.

Trump has often taken credit for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, based on his appointment of three Justices who provided the additional votes to both take up a review of Roe v. Wade and to repeal it. Trump has…
