Ghana’s freshly elected (December 7) President-elect John Dramani Mahama has signaled the dawn of a new day in African military, political, and economic dispensations. This “new” president begins his second non-consecutive term promising to finally end and then reverse the 500-year-plus misdirection of West Africa’s history generally, and Ghana’s subservience to Western colonizers, neo-colonizers, imperialists, neo-colonialists, and neo-imperialists.

The President-elect says that he and Ghana are prepared to force the return of earth’s second largest and richest continent to its pre-colonial, pre-imperialist position as the superpower it was for at least 1,000 years before the Europeans showed up.

We know and understand only a fraction of that sordid history. We are still learning and searching as we exhume and center that history. We know that predatory colonialism’s/imperialism’s “greatest” “achievement” was to conduct the largest, earliest and longest genocide against any people in the history of the world — the Atlantic Slave Trade.

But raiding, robbing, raping, and enslaving Africans was only the beginning. Slavery birthed colonialism…
