After the horror show orchestrated by President Donald Trump where a mob descended on the Capitol to disrupt Congress, refusing to acknowledge Joe Biden will be the next President. Several members of the Trump administration have declared they have had enough and tendered their resignations. I can see why four people dead, the confederate flag being waved inside the Capitol building, explosive devices found, instigated by and cheered on by the President might be unsettling. The question is, what took you so long?
Mick Mulvaney, once Trump’s Chief of Staff, resigned after the Trump incited takeover of the Capitol resulted in five deaths so far, and Trump flags and confederate flags (one and the same?) were waved throughout the Capitol. Mulvaney said:
“I can’t do it. I can’t stay.” He added later, “Clearly, he is not the same as he was eight months ago.”
No, Mick Mulvaney, Trump is exactly the same as he was eight months ago, four years ago, and arguably his whole adult life. Don’t pretend you were acting honorably when you constantly lied to support Trump’s lies and stood by as Trump helped America become a shithole country, worse than those he criticized because we know better. You can’t pretend to be a loyal patriot now when you did such a disservice to all Americans while serving Trump.
Cabinet members Elaine Chao (Mitch McConnell’s wife) and Betsy DeVos both resigned; they were shocked, shocked to discover that Trump was a deranged (expletive deletive) that tried to overthrow the election he lost and caused the death of five and counting. Is it cynical to believe that the two of them wanted to avoid being dragged into the 25th Amendment discussion about the Cabinet and Vice-President removing the President from office and are now trying to salvage their reputations? Both of them were ultra-rich before taking their Cabinet posts and only got richer while allegedly serving their country.
Other more obscure administration officials have resigned. Matthew Pottinger the deputy national security advisor, John Costello a cybersecurity specialist, Tyler Godspeed the acting chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, Stephanie Grisham a former White House press secretary, Rickie Niceta an event planner (not that this White House had any more events to plan). Could it be that all of them, with less than two weeks left to serve anyway, just wanted to get a jump on looking for their next jobs? Fox News only has so many slots for people who sold their souls.
I don’t want to hear anything about people acting honorably, or having reached the last straw or breaking point. All of them, every single one, knew who he was and served him anyway. They ignored his racism, nepotism, narcissism, cynicism and did it without criticism. Don’t pretend now you’ve seen the light.
It’s probably true that most of the remaining people at this point are the Trump loyalists. You won’t see Stephen Miller resigning. Steve Bannon probably wishes he never left. I don’t care who resigns at this point or whatever reason they give. Stay another two weeks, and collect your last few pieces of silver. Then have the decency to disappear from public life forever. It’s the only honorable thing left for you to do.
