I’m Taking a White Supremacy Tour Through the South
My Change of Pace Trip from Florida to Tennessee
When I travel, I’m constantly checking for places, persons, and things related to Black history. I’m taking a brief trip to Nassau, Bahamas, and will see the Queen’s Staircase. It was carved out of limestone rock by 600 enslaved people between 1793 and 1794 to create an escape route from the fort above. I will also visit the Pompey Museum, documenting the escape of enslaved people from the island of Exuma to Nassau, where they petitioned the governor for help. Their hopes were dashed when they were captured and returned; however, the governor had the slaves followed and observed their treatment, which allegedly played a role in the abolition of slavery in The Bahamas and emancipation.
I’ll drive from Palm Coast, FL, to Nashville, TN, for a college reunion and graduation in about a month. I’ve seen many of the Black historical sites along the way: the slave market in Saint Augustine, Fort Mose, numerous sites in the Atlanta area, and several in Tennessee. I’ve decided to take a white supremacy tour to see how prevalent sites are honoring the Confederacy, Ku Klux Klan members, and white supremacists. Because I want to get to Nashville in a timely manner, I choose to stray no further than 30 miles from the Interstate highways during my trip.
