Jewish Space Lasers: Marjorie Taylor Green and the Republican decline

Republican conspiracism has been long in the making.

I have recently had the great displeasure of talking about Marjorie Taylor Green and her allegation of Jewish Space Lasers creating the California wildfires on my podcast. It was rather difficult to discuss, as the post itself is beyond insane. It claims that the Rothschilds, a family of Jewish bankers, had a satellite to fire into California to destroy California’s forests. I could go on and on about how absurd such claims are or how they reveal a deep-seated problem with Rep. Greene specifically. But the more I think about it, the more this incident of blatant absurdity becomes almost expected for me. Conspiracism has been the go-to method of political action for four years now, maybe even longer. Why are we surprised?

From the very beginning, the Trumpist Republican brand was built via conspiracism and wild conjecture. In the Spring of 2011, then private citizen Donald Trump alleged that he had sent private investigators to Hawaii to ascertain whether or not Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States, was a natural-born citizen. Trump said he had “serious doubts” about whether or not he was a citizen. In an interview with Good Morning America, he alleged that he was hiding his birth certificate…
