The Republicans — Fascist Party of the United States (Part 2)
‘They are who we thought they were’
The re-emergence of fascism under the Republican Party
In 1980, Ronald Reagan began his run for President in Philadelphia, Mississippi. It is a famous moment that is always mentioned in the history books. Yet, too much is to be made of that moment.
Philadelphia was the city where three civil rights workers had been murdered in 1964 during Freedom Summer. This area was the stronghold of overt Jim Crow politics, white nationalism, white supremacy, white rule over the land and the lives of Black people. This was where slavery had blossomed into the million dollar industry at the expense, health, and well. being of African people. Reagan came there to send a message.
But, Reagan’s party, the Republicans had long since pivoted towards a race based fascism as its primary organizing ideology long before the speech.
