When asked why they support former President Trump, despite his ugly and vulgar rhetoric, many Republicans or MAGA supporters often highlight his economic impact, stating that “the economy was great” during his tenure. Considering that the economy continues to be a primary concern for American voters, let’s explore several economic factors from the period when Trump took over from Obama to the current Biden-Harris administration.
Whether a sitting president or vice president can significantly impact an economy as large and complex as that of the U.S. remains open to question. Nevertheless, both candidates are campaigning based on their economic records.
Former President Trump claims he inherited a “disaster” from President Obama and “accomplished an economic turnaround of historic proportions.” In reality, the economy had already recovered from the Great Recession of 2008 and was performing well during the Obama administration. This resilient economy was what Trump inherited. During the first three years of his tenure, it ran relatively smoothly with occasional bumps until the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
