LOTUS for POTUS
Indian Americans have rallied for Kamala Harris whose name in Sanskrit means Lotus
Vice President Kamala Harris is the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent on a Presidential ticket. A Jamaican-American and an Indian-American by heritage, she is also biracial.
Like other Indian Americans, my family was thrilled when Joe Biden chose Kamala Harris as his vice president in 2020. This time, we feel immense joy at the possibility of Kamala being the next president of the United States. Part of the enthusiasm for Harris stems from pride in a shared identity.
Harris’ Story is also My Family’s Story
My family shares a similar history and upbringing with Kamala Harris. We emigrated from India to the United States in the 1980s, seeking a world-class education, just like Kamala’s parents, Shyamala Gopalan and Donald Harris. My wife and I pursued graduate studies and earned advanced degrees. Despite facing discrimination due to our brown skin and accents, we persevered, paving the way for the next generation to achieve their dreams. Kamala’s story resonates with many immigrants like us who came to this country in search of opportunities.
