A few weeks ago, I wrote about the German elections and what this could spell for the EU. In a pre-US election political missive I told everyone to keep an eye on what’s happening in Moldova. Today, I’m back to let you all know Romania is on the brink of electing a new President. The newcomer (and it will be a newcomer) will be the fifth President since the fall of the USSR.

Buckle up; if you’re a left-leaning social democrat like me, you’re not going to enjoy the sudden change of direction.

Călin Georgescu is an independent candidate, and ultranationalist politician who is currently topping the polls in the Romanian first round. Klaus Iohannis, the incumbent, is in third place and won’t even go into the run off next week.

More than a few eyebrows have been raised in the capital cities of Europe, and the surprise led by a hitherto unknown has prompted a few questions.

Most importantly, who the hell is Călin Georgescu anyhow? Followed by, how is he near the top of Romanian politics? These aren’t stupid questions, Georgescu ran a minimal campaign, didn’t have backing by any political party, and wasn’t featured in the…
