Still Tryin’ to “Make the World a Better Place to Live In”
I still hope for a better tomorrow, but today …
I’ve written one hundred seventy articles on politics urging readers to be the good people I insist they can be. I’ve spent one thousand one hundred and ninety hours googling issues, fact-checking, typing, retyping, erasing and typing again, editing, then shaking my head and editing again.
Facts have been my friends. Hope has been my helpmate.
But all my efforts, when I measure them against the lies and hate spewed by Fox News and Truth Social, are so paltry and pitiful.
It is now 13 days away from voting day. I’ve spent much of the day wandering about aimlessly. I’ve done a couple of loads of laundry, vacuumed my tiny living room, brushed the dog, boiled some beans, and wandered around aimlessly again, thinking about what we once thought we could accomplish and, having failed, what we still face today.
An old woman now, I personally experienced the '60s cultural revolution devolve into a contest to see who had the bellbottoms with the widest cuffs. In the 70s, I mourned my friend Johnny Nunnely, lost to a senseless war in Vietnam, and I watched on TV as U.S. soldiers fled that country, leaving behind the Vietnamese…
