The Israel-Hamas ceasefire draws attention as activists intensify their discussion about Gaza’s future. Rebuilding Operation discussions grew heated when a refugee proposal emerged about moving Gazan civilians to Indonesia as third-party hosts. A controversial relocation concept has gained some acceptance among U.S. officials and far-right Israeli politicians raising major humanitarian and geopolitical worries.

Humanitarian Concerns

Decisions to move Gaza’s population either long-term or short-term create substantial ethical challenges alongside practical organizational issues. The Pacific Asian nation of Indonesia with its majority Muslim population has consistently backed the Palestinian struggle. Reports last week showed that Indonesian officials were unware of the suggested Palestinian relocation issue which Steve Witkoff proposed when serving as a Trump administration Middle East envoy. The government of Jakarta declared any effort to move Gaza residents as wholes unacceptable while condemning these actions.

Some extremist Israeli ministers support the concept of forced Palestinian relocation from Gaza so they can replace the empty territory with Jewish residents. An overwhelming number of Palestinians have rejected plans…
