A poem

The doctor says I should quit
drinking. It’s not so much
a suggestion, as a medical order,
since alcohol exacerbates
the acid reflux that is scarring
my esophagus, enough that
I’ve had trouble swallowing
my food.

There’s nothing quite so scary
as a large bite of pizza
or burger or sandwich
hanging near the back of your throat,
inducing panic
because your brain refuses
to remember such an autonomous
instinct.

I’ve been taking my meds
meant to reduce
my stomach’s acidity,
and for over a month,
all I drank was water.

It wasn’t long before I wanted
off the wagon,
my tongue so tired
of the tasteless,
my mind so bored
of the sitcom rerun
my life has become,
minus the laugh track.

Look at the world.
We live in a terrarium
turned hourglass,
unaware of when exactly
it was flipped.

If I’m going to suffocate
within a tide of sand,
I’m at least going down
with a beer in my hand.
