One of the most transformative experiences for me as a poet was when a high school teacher taught me the connection between inner silence, meditative music, and poetry.

To sit and listen to meditative music and just allow the writing process to flow uninhibited — this can produce poetic gold. If nothing comes to begin with, just begin writing with a pen and paper — anything at all that enters your mind.

Write until the poem begins to come. And it will.

Meditative music must work as some kind of creative energy flow “channel” for poets. I find it nearly impossible to sit and allow the music to flow through me and not have poems come right along with it. Learning about your own channel through music can open you up as a poet in new ways. I challenge you to find your musical connection to your poetry through this exercise.

Set the music. Prepare your screen for writing or get pen and paper. Eliminate any distractions. Light a candle if you wish or set out some incense. Then, just enjoy writing whatever comes to mind as the music transports you. Allow the music to pull you in whatever creative direction your mind wants to go. Be brave. What comes may sometimes surprise you. If a word comes, write it. If phrases come, write…
