The Day I Died

The day I died
I was swallowed whole by the ocean
Wrapped in a cocoon of marbled water
Down, down I went
Whilst angry bees swarmed above

The day I died
I had known the honey was tainted
Not for my mouth
I didn’t think it would be this bitter
I didn’t think I’d kill the queen

The day I died
There was a war deep inside my body
I couldn’t stop the stinging
I ripped off my skin, desperate
For freedom, I jumped into the water

The day I died
The last thing I felt
Was water in my lungs
Swollen bee stings they said I deserved
And static and whispers draped in sunlight

The day I died
Bees hovered over my corpse
Sharks circled; there is no peace in death
My spilt and severed body now bait
All the creatures hovered for their pieces

The day I died
I felt nothing and felt everything
I still remember the stings
Bitter stings of betrayal, swollen skin
I remember his face grinning in the static

The day I died
He brought a new queen
To the hive, and dipped his fingers in sweet honey
He watched the tide smash against the cliffs
Drinking my honey, he’s already forgotten my name
