The Nile of America

About water and power.

ca. 1681 map of the Mississippi River system, based on the 1673 expedition of Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet. Melchisédech Thévenot / Public domain

A story as old as Time:
Poor people pushed around by rivers.
Muddy waters churning memories —
Juggernauts praised and despised.

They’ve been male, female;
Yellow — Red — Green:
A mighty one takes from Black families.
Cold, once gelid waters

Rush with planet carving might.
Proud people wielded hunger and drive;
They escaped its Old Man wrath,
Its endless, uncaring flow.

This cruel water avatar
Cradled America’s soul —
A story as old as words:
Los ríos son mis poetas favoritos*.

*rivers are my favorite poets.
