sometimes
it’s better to just be straightforward
to be just a little bit blunt

i could place the words i want to say
in a neat little package
top it off with a glittery bow
and wrapped in shimmery paper
dotted with prismatic shapes
forming a kaleidoscope of colors
all around its squared edges

a temporary state of beauty
perhaps
but beautiful nonetheless

and i could give it to you
to your expectant hands
and you could unfurl the bow
discard the superficial
and try to sneak a peek
of what is inside

what could it be
that is beyond such a dazzling array
that you hold?

but this sublime exterior
is certainly beguiling
unassuming
perhaps, deceiving
to those that do not know

the reveal
is only part of the high

you see
the festering wound
beneath the pleasantries
has reopened itself
once again
to seep through
the cracked fissures
of an asthenic shell

bandages of cement
laid in an attempt to smother
deeper and deeper
but prove to be a weak opponent
against one with intent

because
the wound
will want to leave
in the hopes of seeking repair
or, rather
in a race to infect
bouncing from blood to blood
for sustenance of any sort
because
trying to live
in an environment
so noxious
is surely tiring
but you get used to it

the dichotomy
is an object of fascination
how something so beautiful
or, rather
something so unassuming
could house something so grim

it is not to scare you
but i do not like to lie
words only do so much

so
how many perfectly wrapped presents
would suffice
how many times
could i give you their burden
how many times
could i wrap the bow
and craft the wall of paper
before they crumble
at a mere touch?

i am unsure
how to phrase it
there are
a myriad of ways
i could respond
to a question
unaware of its magnitude

but i think
it would be a lot easier
to simply say

it’s complicated.
