Portage County’s registered Democrats and Independents far outnumber Republicans in early voting, according to data from the county Board of Elections.

The information shows 5,827 Republicans have either dropped off their mail-in ballot at the Board of Elections or voted early in person. By comparison, 12,260 Democrats, 15,771 Independents and 28 Libertarians have done the same.

In every community in Portage County, the number of Democrats who have voted early is higher than their Republican counterparts. In some communities, such as Nelson Township, the numbers are fairly close with 100 Republican ballots cast and 114 Democratic. But in other areas, the numbers are a bit more staggering. In Kent, 2,389 Democrats already voted, seven times the number of Republicans.

The data are indicative of the trend nationwide with Democratic voters outnumbering Republicans in early voting. Many suspect that more Republicans will be voting in person on Election Day.

In most of the county, Independent voters have a moderate lead on both Republicans and Democrats, with Aurora having the highest number of Independent early voters: 2,920.

This data only include ballots either dropped off or cast early at the Board of Elections and do not include mailed-in ballots.

Residents can vote early at the Board of Elections Office in Ravenna up until Nov. 3, with voting schedules and updates posted to the office’s Facebook page.
