That Little Voice Inside Your Head

Positive Self-Talk Will Change Your World

How many of us can confidently say that the majority of conversations we have in our own heads are overwhelmingly positive? I would take a wild guess and say the percentages are disappointingly low.

Personally, my self-talk ranges from daily affirmations to the comeback for the conversation that I had with someone four days ago. There is always a wide range of emotions available inside our own heads; however, it is up to us to monitor it.

Not often do we think of monitoring our self-talk. It can be the background noise that we don’t put much thought into, or it can be the guiding force in our lives. Maybe its both? The notion of not monitoring our own self-talk is ludicrous, our self happens to be the person we talk to most in our lives (Sad? Crazy? or Honest? I’ll let you decide). Imagine going through life never thinking about the conversations you have with your parents, best friend, or significant other. Sounds kind of foolish, doesn’t it?

The truth of the matter is that many of us go through our lives allowing our self-talk to go largely on auto-pilot. When we decide to first take a look at our self-talk we may find that it sways more to the neutral or negative side. We cannot accept that.

Ladies and Gentlemen we are currently the only species on the planet, to our knowledge, with such advanced cognitive function that allows us to have thoughtful and meaningful conversations with ourselves. What an amazing tool that we are wildly misusing! We have the opportunity to be both our biggest fan and our most knowledgeable coach.

There may be those that believe consistent positive self-talk(PST) may make someone blind to their own possible shortcomings. Others may believe that to be a good coach we need to be our biggest critics. You know what? They are (half) right.

So what half are they missing?

The greatest coach is able to identify what is going wrong and devise strategies to successfully solve a problem, and the biggest fans provide us with support when we need it most! Positive self-talk comes when we merge both the “fan” and the “coach.”

This process of taking up PST is not a quick or easy ordeal. We as humans are hardwired to look for negativity, it is what helped keep us alive thousands of years ago. Hopefully now that most of us do not have to be weary of predators lurking in the high grass we can focus on tackling a different, yet possibly more challenging foe: ourselves. We should not expect to conquer this foe all at once. This is an internal battle of attrition, not a blitzkrieg; however, the payoff is worth the fight. Just like any habit, PST can take time until it is part of your everyday life.

The goal of PST is to get your subconscious and conscious minds working on the same mission. When we open up the ability for our brain to work as a cohesive unit instead of a divided team, we allow for our potential to be fully realized.

Positive Self-Talk requires dedication; however, as we all know, nothing in life that is worthwhile takes little effort.

I encourage that everyone takes a critical look at their own self-talk. Is it helping you reach your goals? If it is not, then it is time for some serious overhaul.

I look forward to sharing with you all my routine that has caused PST to be a habit in my life instead of a chore
