If you’re a new freelancer — whatever your specialty may be — I desperately hope that I can keep you from making the same mistakes I have. Failing to ask the right questions before taking on a project can lead to sticky situations that are best when avoided. This is true when working with fresh clients or taking on new types of projects from existing clients.

Think about it: you don’t have anyone above you to absorb responsibility, and you’re the only person your work reflects back on. By not just asking questions, but asking the right questions, you’re actively firming up client relationships, reaping the rewards of your expert skills, and — most of all — securing the bag.

Every freelance venture is unique, so I can’t tell you all of the questions you’ll have to ask in order to determine the project’s scope. What I can do, however, is share three questions you’ll definitely want to ask, no matter the industry you’re in.

1. What are your goals for this work, and how will you measure it?
