At the highest levels of Jiu-Jitsu, the metagame evolves ridiculously fast.

Techniques that were all the rage just 6 months ago are completely irrelevant now. You can learn a technique today and your opponent can learn the counter tomorrow, making today’s work seemingly irrelevant.

My strategy on the mat from 6 months ago would not survive today. I’d be missing out on way too much.

This is the reality of a fast-growing competitive sport — things change fast.

It’s not what you know, it’s how you apply what you know.

To even have a chance at trying to apply knowledge at the highest levels, you must learn how to learn and apply knowledge very quickly.

This mindset isn’t just limited to Jiu-Jitsu, either. Whether you’re a writer, athlete, or entrepreneur, the ability to learn quickly is perhaps the most essential skill in the 21st century. In order to become a martial artist who is always keeping up with the cutting edge of technical trends, I’ve had to become a very fast learner.
