Getting Fired Sucks

“Sometimes God will place a wall on your path to force you to go in another direction.” — Suzy Kassem

Yes it does.

But there are many more things that suck more like getting divorced, going bankrupt or a close family member or friend dying.

Guess what?

You will get over getting fired and yes they say it is a traumatic experience.

I was just talking to a coworker of mine who was being “let go” aka fired. I was anxious to hear the reason and his point of view. But I did not want to talk while at work. I told him that I was pissed about what happened and he told me not to let it affect me. What a good man he is.

I found out from other sources that this coworker was not getting along with his boss. I guess it reached a point where the boss just about had enough and decided he was not worth keeping.

It reminded me of the time I got fired. I was working for a small company doing data recovery. I started out restoring backup tapes and emails along with everyone else.

After about a year or so they asked me what my career aspirations in the company I wanted. I was like cool they want me to grow with the company.

So I told them I would like to be a project manager. They decided to give me a chance and promoted me.

I was stoked.

I started off great by meeting a few deadlines and getting things done. I was in a groove.

It was only after a few months that I noticed a change in management’s behavior towards me. Two of my projects were a little behind and the customers were getting a little agitated but I handled them and I thought everything was fine.

My boss and the people ahead of me in charge did not see it that way. I tried to follow another project manager who was liked. I did EXACTLY what he did but it still wasn’t good enough.

I schedule a meeting with my boss sensing her disappointment. I asked point blank what am I doing wrong. I got no answer.

Then I met with the President of the company and asked what am I doing wrong and again no answer. I made it clear that I wanted to help the company any way I could and that learning what I was doing wrong would go a long way to fixing any issues that they thought I was having.

The next week I think it was my boss was moved on to the sales department and I got a new boss. I thought ok this is good I could start fresh with someone new. It did not take long before I was being pitted against my new boss by my old boss.

It was not a fun few months.

I was played like a patsy between them because they did not like each other at all. I tried my best to appease both of them but it did not work and I was put on third shift working overnights and demoted back to where I was doing grunt work.

I was not happy but I took it in stride and prided myself on being a team player. I think I was on night shift for a few months until a mistake was made by me. I was asked by the project manager on days to prepare for shipment a hard drive containing recovered data. He told me EXACTLY where it was and I took his word for it.

Well the data he told me to send out was blank and the customer was pissed. I came in the next morning to my human resources lady crying and I knew what was about to happen. I was going to be fired for the hard drive with no data.

I remember it like it was yesterday and I had to calm the human resources lady because she was upset she had to do this.

I was pissed but at this point I was like I don’t give a shit and I am glad I am out of here. I knew I would get unemployment and I began looking ASAP.

The point is I have been fired and I know the feeling sucks but it is a new chance to hit the ground running and start over with a new company or find your own thing.

I took it as a breath of fresh air and utilized my time to re-energize my batteries.

You should do the same.

If you enjoyed reading this post please give a few claps. I would appreciate it. I would also love if you shared with others. Thanks.
