My son absolutely loves Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream, a children’s book written by Michael Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan, and his sister, Roslyn M. Jordan. In it, young Michael despairs over making his basketball team lose, after Mark, an antagonizing bully, blocks what would have been Michael’s game-winning shot.

Michael’s older brothers console and encourage him on the walk back home. But Michael is still crestfallen. He reasons that in order to help his team, he must grow taller, so that he can shoot above defenders, namely Mark.

Michael asks his mom for suggestions on growing taller, and she advises him to put salt in his shoes.

She sprinkles the salt in his shoes after he has gone to bed that night. This is after she has told Michael…
