I Crashed on My Friend’s Couch for a Month — Here’s What I Learned
The unexpected rewards of embracing freedom and spontaneity
I’ll never forget the summer I crashed on my friend’s couch for a month.
I had just turned 21 and was feeling restless and ready for a change. So, when my third year of university came to an end, I left the city where I had been studying and partying and moved to a new one where I knew no one.
My plan was to freelance my way through the summer to cover my rent and expenses. I found a cheap subleased room from another student and settled in, ready to embrace this new chapter in my life.
At first it was exciting — no classes to attend or job to report to, just pure freedom and exploration. But as the weeks went by, I started to miss my old life and the friends I had left behind.
I had a few friends who lived in a house together near my school, and I started visiting them on the weekends. I would crash on their couch for the weekend, then head back out.
But before I knew it, I was coming back more and more often. Eventually, what started as a joke became a reality. So, with only a duffle bag full of clothes and a laptop to work on, I officially moved onto my friend’s couch for a month.
