Do not think of the toilet as an inconsequential corner of your house.

You may not spend a lot of time in the bathroom on any given day, but that is the place where great ideas may strike.

It is not only Greek polymath Archimedes who, as the apocryphal story goes, had his Eureka moment when he was in the tub.

Many of us have in fact been hit with a flash of inspiration or brilliance while in the shower or sitting on the loo. The mind may have been engrossed in finding the solution to a critical problem for a while and unexpectedly, while taking the shower or easing ourselves, we say: “ah, I finally got it.”

As for American R&B legend Lionel Richie, he did not solve a billion-dollar mystery in the bathroom but that is where he finished writing a ballad.

He went to the toilet to get his creative juices flowing, and one of the greatest romantic songs of all time was born.

Johnny Mercer Award winner Richie, who rose to fame in the 80s, wrote Kenny Roger’s 1980 romantic hit ‘Lady’ in the toilet of a recording studio.
