Every year around the holidays, families get together to eat, drink, and seemingly assess each other’s life choices. How were your grades this semester? How are those job or college applications going? Why are you still single? The list goes on.

Whatever the inquiry is, we all know what it feels like to have well-meaning elders ask about our plans for the future. And we can all agree that these questions are irritating — because, well, we don’t have the answers. The irony is, the people asking us didn’t know what they were doing in their teens or twenties, either. They probably still don’t know.

In 2020 and beyond, young people have more choices than ever before when it comes to deciding what to do with your lives. But it wasn’t always this way. If you’re a Millennial or part of Gen Z, chances are your parents are either Baby Boomers or Gen X-ers. When they were your age, options were limited. Most people entered the workforce out of high school and never left. Those that went to college were almost guaranteed a high-paying corporate job with benefits. But those days are long gone.

Today, more than 57 million Americans freelance, including 40% of Millennials and 54% of Gen Z workers. Meanwhile, college graduates owe more in student loans than ever before — $30,000, to be exact. As technology continues…
