Every once in a while I realize a friend, or someone I am on good terms with, unfollows me on Instagram.

I am aware that unfollowing someone has more to do with themselves, and their internal feelings, than with me. Some people just don’t like you, and don’t have the nerve to tell you why. When there isn’t a real reason to dislike someone — a reason isn’t given.

Our friendships nowadays consist of in-person conversations, text messages and social media interactions.

With new features added or changed to social media, it has gotten confusing. There isn’t a guide book on social media etiquette. Should you block, unfollow or mute someone?

People use social media to send a message. The message is subtle and sent in a passive-aggressive way.

It doesn’t help that you can easily find out when someone unfollows you using apps. You can now find out if a friend hid your from viewing their stories.

You might get an inkling that something could be wrong if a friend who used to like all your posts suddenly stopped. It is also awkward to ask— Hey Sara, I noticed you haven’t been liking my posts for the last few months. Is everything okay?
