The Japanese language always amazes me with its nuances and cultural idiosyncracies. Besides keigo (敬語)(honorific language) that I consider an art form, I find casual Japanese slang interesting and very practical for daily usage. Imagine using food condiments to describe the human facial features of the numerous Japanese guys you see on the street!

Well, the Japanese do it!

Thus in today’s post, I speak of some popular expressions to describe the facial features (of men in particular) below.

1.“Shouyugao (しょうゆ顔/Soy-sauce face)”

A guy with a “soy-sauce face” or “shouyugao” (しょうゆ顏) has a characteristically “Japanese-looking” face with long narrow eyes (kirenaga no me 切れ長の目), a straight nose (hanasuji ga toru 鼻筋が通る)with a small, and thin face. An example of a guy with a “soy-sauce face” would be Arashi’s Ninomiya Kazunari.

2.“Saucegao (ソース顔/Sauce face)
